This workbook is designed for beginning readers who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. It provides the reader with opportunities to consider the meaning of the first type of figurative language- the "phra ... sal verb". Phrasal verbs (for example, eat out, dress up, take after, look out, etc.) can be very confusing for young readers because they are not the sum of the word meanings as separate entities. For example "get dressed" does not mean someone will literally obtain (get) a dress. Rather the phrase means "to put clothes on". In this workbook students practice this skill with 60 frequently used phrasal verbs. They will read 2-3 highly contextualized sentences that are written with beginning vocabulary. Students then discuss the meaning of the target phrasal verb. They will identify the ASL sign handshape used to produce the phrasal verb (for example, GET-DRESS uses the 5 handshapes). They cut out the 5 handshape and paste it in a box on the worksheet. Finally, students will illustrate the correct meaning of the target phrasal verb as used in the sentences.
