Listen & Think Brainplay is a rich activity that targets listening, following directions, auditory processing, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.The more a child knows about a topic, such as Thanks ... giving the easier it is to comprehend and retain the information. Background knowledge of recurring holidays and seasons is fundamental for language, academic, and communication success. Listen & Think Brainplay is not only a great way to grow Thanksgiving vocabulary but it fosters back-and-forth conversation. Research is clear that when children engage in serve and return interactions, activity increases in the parts of the brain responsible for listening and spoken language processing and production.Children who are deaf and hard of hearing as well as those students with limited language may struggle to increase their vocabulary because of weak auditory memory, difficulty with auditory comprehension, and lack of exposure. What's Included?28 Thanksgiving-related conversation starters, questions, and trivia topics.Answer sheet with space for data collectionFive suggested ways to playListening and Spoken Language (LSL) TipsEasy one-time prep. “Picture This Phrasal Verbs Figurative Language for Beginning Readers” (Teal workbook)
By Kristin DiPerri
sku: A24RDG1408
$ 20
This workbook is designed for beginning readers who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. It provides the reader with opportunities to consider the meaning of the first type of figurative language- the "phra ... sal verb". Phrasal verbs (for example, eat out, dress up, take after, look out, etc.) can be very confusing for young readers because they are not the sum of the word meanings as separate entities. For example "get dressed" does not mean someone will literally obtain (get) a dress. Rather the phrase means "to put clothes on". In this workbook students practice this skill with 60 frequently used phrasal verbs. They will read 2-3 highly contextualized sentences that are written with beginning vocabulary. Students then discuss the meaning of the target phrasal verb. They will identify the ASL sign handshape used to produce the phrasal verb (for example, GET-DRESS uses the 5 handshapes). They cut out the 5 handshape and paste it in a box on the worksheet. Finally, students will illustrate the correct meaning of the target phrasal verb as used in the sentences. A pre and posttest scoring grid is included for progress monitoring.  The Bedrock Literacy Curriculum manual is available at https://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/product/bedrock-literacy-curriculum/)

SCIENCE VOCAB: BONES! SCIENCE VOCAB: BONES!
SCIENCE VOCAB: BONES!

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM -- DOMAIN SPECIFIC SCIENCE VOCABULARY!Want a clever way to increase students' science vocabulary? Use this worksheet as Halloween approaches or at any time during the school year f ... or a warm-up to the school day or in-between activities. In my many years of working as an educational interpreter, I noticed that it was not unusual for deaf and hard-of-hearing students who were behind their peers struggle with answering questions that began with: "What's your favorite . . .?" Often, they would answer "yes" or not be sure how to answer. The beauty of this type of worksheet is that there is no wrong answer, it is short-yet-effective, and it exposes students to a variety of categories and vocabulary within a specific domain. If time allows, it can open up a discussion on the topic. Gradually, this type of practice worksheet will help students learn how to answer this common question that seems easy on the surface, but not for those that may not have the background knowledge and vocabulary necessary to answer it.The thumbnail for this “What’s Your Favorite?” series will have a violet purple background - violet for vocabulary! Looking for fast and easy vocabulary building worksheets? Look for the violet thumbnails! Like the "What's Your Favorite...?" worksheet series?
