This workbook, though beyond the beginning level, provides a clear format for considering how figurative language "works" without high level vocabulary and difficult syntax. Using simple vocabulary ... abulary and comprehensible context, each page has a single word that is used figuratively in two very short paragraphs (e.g. LIGHT- 1) eat a light lunch, 2) to feel light headed). Students read the paragraph, discuss the intent, provide evidence from details in the paragraph that lead to their definition of the highlighted phrase. They then illustrate the paragraph.  The Bedrock Literacy Curriculum manual is available at https://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/product/bedrock-literacy-curriculum/)

Listen & Think Brainplay is a rich activity that targets listening, following directions, auditory processing, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. The more a child knows about a topic, such as Thanks ... giving the easier it is to comprehend and retain the information. “Picture This Multiple Meanings for Beginning English Readers” (Orange workbook)
By Kristin DiPerri

This workbook contains 60 target multiple meaning words in sentences for beginning readers. Each page highlights a single English word (e.g. hard ) and uses it in two separate, contextualized sente ... tences (e.g. 1) Brian can't sleep. His bed is too hard. 2) The teacher gave a math test. It was hard ! ). The student reads each sentence. If translating to ASL, the student decides which ASL handshape was used to make the sign for the target word in each sentence. The student cuts out the related ASL Handshape from a copied page with all handshapes and pastes it in the correct box. As each sentence uses a multiple meaning for the word the handshapes used will be different-visually signifying the difference in meaning despite the same English word. Finally the student illustrates the sentence meaning. Vocabulary and sentences are kept simple to ensure cognitive energy is focused of the meaning of the word in context. The Bedrock Literacy Curriculum manual is available at https://successforkidswithhearingloss.com/product/bedrock-literacy-curriculum/)

What are “endonyms”This is a story to help children/students who wear hearing aids understand why they may go to the doctor and/or ENT more often than others. The story can be read for comprehension. It teaches new vocabulary and creates a wonderful language opportunity for students to better advocate for themselves at school, home, and the doctor/ENT office. This story was written with younger children and their families and older students who continue to come to school with blocked hearing aids and do not use an interpreter for language access.Service Activity for EI-ECSE Families & Home VisitsFor any family, this story can be an important conversation starter, or reminder, to understand the language impact of even partially clogged hearing aids for their kid(s) who are not using signs. This can be demonstrated to parents by using a listening tube when their child’s hearing aid is plugged in and cleaned, and then having them listen again to the difference in clarity of language coming through the hearing aid to their child’s brain.Story Printable OptionPrint each two-page spread in landscape mode OR - Print a two-page spread but cut apart pages to show 1 page at a time.
